Topic: 3D digital assets for cultural heritage

This colloquium and workshop focuses on the impact of 3D digital assets for cultural heritage. Digitisation of museum objects is not a final stage, but only a start for research, conservation and interpretation. 3D offers us a new set of tools and methodologies that will change the cultural heritage domain significantly. New visualisation technologies, both online and in the museum, and new interaction technologies open a wide range of opportunities for museum curators and cultural heritage experts to share the results of their work and the value and beauty of their collection.

This event contains three parts. In the colloquium on the first day, digital heritage experts from Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy will present different applications of 3D digitisation and virtual reconstruction in research, collection management, publication, education and public presentation. In the second day, several applications are elaborated through a series of workshops. During the colloquium and workshop, a Digital Museum Expo will take place. This is a series of hands-on demonstrations of innovative applications, such as the museum installations that have been developed in the V-MusT project for the multi-museum exhibition Keys2Rome or the online visualisation of 3D digital assets in Europeana, developed in the 3D-ICONS project. Other heritage institutions and companies will be present also.

The official language of the colloquium and the workshop is English. You can register for the colloquium, the workshop or both. Please fill and send the registration form, the payment will take place on site before the beginning of the event. It will be possible to have a receipt of your payment.

2015 TNA call for applications

As part of its Transnational Access (TNA) activities, the ARIADNE project is offering researchers the opportunity to apply to participate in summer schools and individual training visits to carry forwards their own research. For 2015, calls for applications will be opened every three months.

The first 2015 call for applications is open from 20th December 2014 to 22 March 2015

Researchers are invited to apply to participate in Summer Schools hosted by Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche and the Athena Research Centre (Athens) and also for individual training visits hosted by PIN and the Athena Research Centre (Xanthi). Individual work forms an important part of both the summer schools and individual visits, which provide opportunities to develop case studies or research projects proposed by participants under expert supervision.

We welcome applications from individuals with a scientific interest and ability to benefit from training in archaeological research data management.

Sponsorship is available up to 800 euros per participant (to cover the cost of travel and accommodation) plus a tuition fee waiver. Bursaries are awarded on a competitive basis, according to the procedure described in the application pack and eligibility criteria below, and based upon the quality of the applicant, their proposed project, and their personal statement. 5-10 bursaries are available from ARIADNE in 2015 for each TNA centre listed below.

ARIADNE Summer Schools are open to all researchers at a tuition fee of 500 euros. A maximum of 20 participants is planned for each summer school.

Life among ruins

The exhibition "Life among ruins" explores the relationship of people of different social and ethnic groups and from different periods (Byzantine, Ottoman and Early Modern) in the Eastern Mediterranean with ruined remains of an earlier past. It investigates the impact of the past and its ancient ruins on people's lives, dreams and ideals in later periods.

The exhibition is divided in two parts:

A photographic exhibition, featuring photos of the 1930’s to 1950’s from excavations of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ascsa) in the Athenian Agora, is hosted at the Allard Pierson Museum at Amsterdam (nl) between 21.10.2011 and 29.01.2012.

An online exhibition featuring drawings, sketches and maps of European travellers, who visited the Eastern Mediterranean between the 17th and 19th centuries. These illustrations come from printed books and maps of the 'Bijzondere Collecties' of the University of Amsterdam (nl). These images provide invaluable information on the antiquities themselves as well as on daily life in pre-modern Greece and Turkey.

This CyberMuseum brings to its visitors a collection of antiquities never shown before in the New World. No one has seen any of these artifacts in a “real museum” for the past 25 years. The Virtual Egyptian Museum is a joint venture between CIWA (The California Institute of World Archaeology) and the Senusret Collection. Our objectives are to apply technology-based solutions to:

Bring to the public a collection otherwise locked up in bank vaults.
Provide a rich museum experience to people living in areas remote from cultural centers (with a particular attention to schools).
Develop a cost-effective model for complete online museums.
Use the collection as the basis for an educational journey in egyptology and history.
Help the Senusret Collection to find a permanent home, in a public institution offering excellent professional conservation care.

Louvre-Lens guide multimédia

The multimedia guide of the Louvre-Lens museum offers the visitors a range of audio or video content to accompany their tour through the Grande Galerie, the Pavillon de Verre and the Temporary Exhibition Gallery.

Through wide-ranging or themed commentaries (Myths and Legends, Arts and Religions, etc.), specialists on the collections of the Louvre Museum guide visitors in their exploration of the artworks on display. Multimedia animations sharpen the perception of the works exhibited in the Galerie du Temps by drawing the attention to particular details or symbolic attributes. To reproduce their tour experience as closely as possible, a 3D immersion in the Galerie du Temps is provided to visitors as the main interface, allowing them to access the different commentaries according to where they are.

And afterwards visitors can prolong their visit at home. Using their admission ticket, they will find on the museum's website the artworks that they marked as favourites on their multimedia guide. This will give visitors access to the memory of their tour and they can then share it with their family and friends.

CULTURAMA is a Cultural Panorama over nine screens, the first ever patented 9-projector interactive system. It is an innovative harmonized mix of cultural and natural heritage information, using an informative and attractive multimedia program and the latest display technology. Winner of many awards with Patent Right No. 23651 from the Arab Republic of Egypt- Ministry of State for Scientific Research, the CULTURAMA, which was developed by the Egyptian Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT), allows the presentation of a wealth of data layers, where the presenter can click on an item and go to a new level of detail. It is a remarkably informative multi-media presentation of Egypt’s heritage across 5000 years of history up to modern times, with highlights and examples of Ancient Egyptian, Coptic and Muslim heritage.

The hardware part contains a huge 180 degrees panoramic interactive computer screen with a diameter of 10 meters that consists of nine separate flat screens arranged in a semicircular shape and nine video projectors controlled by a single computer. An Interactive multimedia software was especially developed by our team to enable the display on the panoramic screen.

Norman Rockwell Museum seeks creative, curious and enthusiastic leader for the Museum’s digital division, an individual with a deep love of learning, who will lead strategy, planning, project management, execution and creation of the museum’s digital footprint. The successful candidate will connect audiences of all ages in the Museum galleries, nationally and globally with digital learning experiences delivered via mobile, internet and in-gallery platforms.
